The Department of Electrical and Power Engineering (EPE), College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), invites applications for a ten-day practical short/professional course on Motor Rewinding and Testing. The course equips participants with practical skills in diagnosing, dismantling, rewinding, connecting, testing, and restoring single-phase and three-phase AC motors to safe and efficient operation.

Name of Short Course |
Motor Rewinding and
Testing |
|
Description of the Short/Professional Course |
This hands-on short course
provides a practical, step-by-step introduction to motor rewinding and
testing, equipping participants with essential skills to diagnose faults,
dismantle motors, calculate winding data, form and insert coil groups, make
winding connections, apply insulation techniques, reassemble motors, and
perform final testing, with strong emphasis on safety and industry-standard
workmanship. |
|
Mode of Delivery |
Physical / Face-to-Face
Practical Training The training will combine
classroom-based instruction, demonstrations, and intensive practical workshop
sessions. |
|
Topics/Contents to be Covered |
Ø Introduction
to Electric Motors and Motor Rewinding Ø Motor
Fault Diagnosis and Pre-Repair Testing Ø Motor
Dismantling and Winding Data Recording Ø Winding
Design and Coil Preparation Ø Coil
Insertion and Winding Connections Ø Insulation,
Varnishing and Drying Ø Motor
Reassembly and Final Testing |
|
Expected Learning Outcomes |
Upon completion of this course,
the participants should be able to: Ø Perform
systematic pre-repair testing (using insulation testers/meggers, multimeters,
and growlers) to identify short circuits, open circuits, and earth faults in
motor windings. Ø Safely
dismantle motors, strip burnt coils, and accurately record crucial technical
data including coil pitch, connection diagrams, slot numbers, and wire gauge
size. Ø Operate
manual or semi-automatic winding machines to form precise coil groups, and
safely insert them into stator slots without damaging the slot insulation. Ø Connect
coil groups correctly according to specific configurations (Star, Delta,
Series, or Parallel), solder joints reliably, and apply professional slot
wedges and lacing. Ø Apply
insulation varnish, oven-bake or dry the stator, correctly reassemble the
motor components, and perform final no-load running tests to certify the
motor safe for operational service. |
