Training/Event Description

The Department of Electrical and Power Engineering (EPE), College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), invites applications for a ten-day professional training course on Modern Electrical Installation Design Software. The training bridges fundamental electrical engineering theory with modern Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows, covering 2D electrical design, electrical calculations, lighting simulation, and 3D BIM modelling.

Name of Short Course

Modern Electrical Installation Design Software

Description of the Short/Professional Course

This training bridges fundamental engineering theory with cutting-edge Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows. The training is structured into two progressive phases. Phase One focuses on 2D engineering design principles using AutoCAD Electrical, where participants will master single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection device coordination, and analytical calculations for load estimation, short-circuit faults, and voltage drops based on international standards such as IEC, BS, and NEC. Phase Two focuses on a 3D parametric database environment using Autodesk Revit MEP. Participants will learn to import 2D schematics, perform lighting simulations using DIALux, route complex 3D containment systems, build custom parametric schedules, extract accurate 3D wire lengths, and generate structured Bills of Quantities (BOQ).

Mode of Delivery

Physical / Face-to-Face Practical Training

The training will combine classroom-based instruction, software demonstrations, guided design exercises, and practical computer-based sessions.

Topics/Contents to be Covered

Ø  Electrical design using international standards including BS, IEC, and IEEE.

Ø  2D electrical distribution architecture using AutoCAD.

Ø  Single-line diagrams (SLDs) and electrical distribution layouts.

Ø  Maximum demand and diversity factor calculations.

Ø  Transformer sizing and short-circuit fault calculations.

Ø  Circuit breaker selection and discrimination.

Ø  Conductor sizing, installation methods, ambient conditions, and grouping correction factors.

Ø  Voltage-drop calculations and verification.

Ø  2D floor plans for lighting, small power rings, and switchboards.

Ø  Importing DWG layouts into Autodesk Revit MEP.

Ø  Establishing shared coordinates and linking structural/architectural files.

Ø  Electrical project spaces and 3D BIM modelling.

Ø  Lighting simulation using DIALux.

Ø   3D containment routing and modelling.

Ø  Extraction of 3D wire lengths and containment quantities.

Ø  Generation and export of Bills of Quantities (BOQ) to Excel.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the participants should be able to:

Ø  Apply international electrical standards such as BS, IEC, and IEEE when designing complex 2D electrical distribution systems using AutoCAD.

Ø  Perform calculations for maximum demand, diversity factors, transformer sizing, and short-circuit fault currents, and verify circuit breaker selection and discrimination.

Ø  Size electrical conductors considering ambient conditions, installation methods, and grouping correction factors, and calculate percentage voltage drops.

Ø  Draft 2D electrical floor plans showing lighting systems, small power rings, and switchboards.

Ø  Import native 2D AutoCAD layouts (DWG) into Autodesk Revit MEP and establish shared coordinates between disciplines.

Ø  Link structural and architectural files and set up electrical project spaces in Revit MEP.

Ø  Perform lighting simulations using DIALux and develop practical lighting designs.

Ø  Extract accurate mathematical lengths of routed 3D wires and containment quantities.

Ø  Generate and export structured Bills of Quantities (BOQ) directly to Excel and supporting documentation.
